President Biden has just signed an executive order that, if implemented, will effectively seal the U.S.-Mexico border to asylum seekers, who are fleeing violence and danger, turning people away before they have the opportunity to even ask for asylum.

The executive order is just an attempt to score political points ahead of the presidential election. Asylum seekers are real people fleeing danger and persecution. They are not bargaining chips in an ongoing political game.

Dear President Biden:

I am writing to urge you to rescind the executive order that you signed on June 4th. If the order is implemented, it would effectively seal the U.S.-Mexico border to people trying to seek asylum. Similar actions by previous administrations did not decrease the number of asylum seekers seeking safety at the U.S.-Mexico border and were ultimately stalled by the courts. Shutting our door to those fleeing for their lives is malicious and contrary to U.S. law protecting the right of individuals to seek asylum, regardless of how and where they arrive on U.S. soil.

We must increase processing capacity at the U.S./Mexico border by fighting for the necessary resources to process asylum seekers fairly and efficiently. Increasing restrictions and denying access to the U.S. asylum system will not change the realities for those trying to find protection.

We must live up to our legal and moral responsibilities to not return individuals to countries where they are likely to face persecution. It's not just their humanity that is at stake - it's ours too.
