We at (COMMUNITY/CONGREGATION in CITY, STATE) wish to congratulate you on your election to the United States Congress.

Our community is part of a network of Jewish congregations and organizations across the United States who are deeply committed to working for the rights, safety, and dignity of refugees, in the midst of the largest global refugee crisis in history.  Our community knows all too well what it means to have to flee from violence and persecution in search of safety, and the critical importance that refugees find welcome and protection. Our tradition teaches us to recognize the humanity and dignity of each and every person.

As the 118th session of Congress begins, we encourage you to be a leader on issues both domestic and international to uphold the rights and safety of refugees, asylum seekers, and others who have been displaced. Specifically:

  • Be a leader in speaking out on the importance of welcoming refugees to the United States. Support robust refugee resettlement, and a fair asylum process.
  • Allocate robust resources for international humanitarian programming and foreign aid, and assistance globally.
  • Call on the administration to follow-through on their commitment to global leadership in refugee protection, including through durable solutions like resettlement.
  • Urge the administration to end policies that deny people the right to seek asylum, particularly at the U.S.-Mexico border, especially as the United States continues to call on other countries to do the same at their borders.
  • Rebuild the U.S. asylum system so that it is fair, efficient, and humane.
  • Ensure that those who enter the U.S. through parole programs like Operation Allies Welcome and Uniting for Ukraine, as well as those that assist individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean, have a pathway to apply for U.S. citizenship so that they have the opportunity to stay in the U.S. permanently.
  • Oppose policies that harm refugees, asylum seekers, and parolees, and ensure that such provisions are not included in legislation that passes Congress.

We look forward to continuing to engage with you on this issue in the coming weeks, and will reach out to schedule a meeting with your office to discuss specific policy priorities. As you take leadership on this issue on the Hill, we commit to doing the same in our (district/state), so that we can together work to build a welcoming community for our newest neighbors, and to advocate for the rights of refugees around the world.

Sincerely,
